Steve has spent a lifetime in the music business as a player, a retailer and a music teacher.
Originally from Birmingham, Steve now lives just outside of Weymouth on the south coast of England in Beautiful Dorset. He started playing at the age of just 4 years old and his professional career began in 1983 when he won the "Midlands Organist of the Year" competition. This launched him onto a musical career that has seen Steve involved in many different aspects of the music business.
Retail
Steve initially worked for a well-known music shop, Roy Jevons Music, based in Dudley in the West Midlands. He then opened his own shop, Bromsgrove Music Centre, in the small town of Bromsgrove between Birmingham and Worcester. The shop sold Technics organs, keyboards and pianos, Yamaha keyboards, Kawai and Kurzweil pianos, plus a whole variety of other instruments such as guitars, clarinets, violins, trumpets, music and accessories. Steve spent many happy years there until 2004 when the decision was made to sell the business and move to Dorset.
Tuition
Steve has always been involved in music tuition and teaches all ages and abilities from children to adults and absolute beginners to professional standards. He teaches piano, keyboard, and music theory and also helps with GCSE and A level music. Music exams are available for all those wishing to take them and Steve also helps people to use their instruments with product knowledge lessons for all levels of player.
Whilst running the music shop in Bromsgrove Steve opened Bromsgrove Music School which was a Technics Music Academy and became one of the largest in the UK with over 450 pupils and a team of 13 teachers. For a time Steve also took over the running of Telford Music Academy when the original owners emigrated which he converted to a Yamaha Music School. This was only ever a temporary arrangement however and Telford Music Academy is going from strength-to-strength under the direction of its new owner, Jayne Watt.
Steve now teaches from his home studio in Dorset and both Steve and his wife Michelle go into many local schools to teach children to play. Steve also provides online video lessons for those who are too far away for in-person lessons.
Playing
Steve's playing started, like so many others, in pubs and clubs entertaining guests and backing artists. However, his sights were firmly set on concerts, and so Steve has spent his entire musical career playing concerts for organ/keyboard clubs and festivals. He is especially noted for his orchestral style of playing and his musical arrangements which take many hours of preparation. Steve has always tried to play the latest state-of-the-art instruments to give the best possible sounds including Technics organs, keyboards and pianos, Yamaha Tyros and Genos keyboards, and a custom-made Midi set-up comprising of midi controller keyboards and pedals connected to an array of sound modules by Roland, Kurzweil and Yamaha. This was a unique set-up that Steve became famous for wherever he played.
Steve's latest concert instrument sees another new venture as Steve is now delighted to be working with Korg and is using the latest Korg flagship professional arranger keyboard, the fabulous Pa5X together with a Bose sound system for all his concert and festival performances.
Steve has been featured many times on radio including Radio 2 "The Organist Entertains" and Radio WM "Keyboard Magic" plus various streaming platforms. Some of his playing highlights include opening the Technics World Music Festival at the ICC in Birmingham and performing live on TV on, believe it or not, "Celebrity Big Brother".
Latest News
Steve joined the Korg team in 2024. In addition to his concert and festival performances and his tuition and product knowledge lessons Steve also does exhibitions, demonstrations, webinars and customer support for Korg keyboard owners. He writes articles for Keyboard Cavalcade Magazine and is currently in the process of producing a brand-new CD and a range of software for Pa5X.
