About Tom

Tom’s first foray in to the world of music was in 1979 when, at the tender age of 6, he started having private piano lessons.  He learnt mostly classical music, but occasionally ventured into more contemporary music, including jazz, musical theatre, easy listening and film and television themes.

He quickly discovered that he had a good ear for music and could play a piece simply by listening to it.  Whilst he can read music, he often finds it quicker to learn a piece by listening to it!

In 1989, he won the subject prize for music, at his school’s annual prize giving, and was rewarded with a £20 book voucher and his first professional gig; accompanying his school choir on piano, for a BBC Radio 4 broadcast of “The Daily Service”, for which he was paid the handsome fee of £28!!

After leaving school, he went to London Guildhall University and studied Musical Instrument Technology, specialising in piano tuning, renovation, design and construction.  He also took additional modules in Electronic Music Technology, covering sound system engineering and design as well as electronic music production.

He still regularly enjoys playing pure piano, but is equally at home playing keyboards, classical organ and theatre organ and has performed for many venues, organisations and individuals, including amateur and professional theatres, charitable organisations, churches, cathedrals, organ/keyboard clubs and many other types of entertainment venues, over his 37 year professional career.

He also occasionally works for Musicland, as a Piano, Keyboard and PA specialist, runs a piano tuning, repair and removal business, plays in a number of local churches for weddings and funerals and runs a PA, lighting and special FX supply, installation and hire business. In addition, he sometimes performs as a stage magician and is a member of EQUITY.
