Gordon Cree is a very unusual performer in that, like Sydney Torch and William Davies before him, he is a theatre organist who is equally well known for many things other than playing the theatre organ.
Gordon Cree is well known as a singer and multi-instrumental variety artiste having topped bills throughout Britain and abroad, a much sought-after piano accompanist - having accompanied many of the world's leading artistes like Marilyn Horne, Moira Anderson and Marilyn Hill Smith, a well respected orchestral conductor - having conducted most of Scotland's major orchestras, a very prolific composer - having had his orchestral pieces such as "Angela" and "Scotland - My Song" performed, recorded and broadcast around the globe, a much sought-after arranger and orchestrator - having arranged countless top artistes' music for stage, screen and recording, and not forgetting character actor, after-dinner speaker and member of the British Ring of the International Brotherhood of Magicians.
In 1989 - at the tender age of twelve - he achieved the title "Scottish Young Organist of the Year" before abandoning his fledgling career as a theatre organist to pursue the career of which the previous paragraph merely scratches the surface. However, whilst appearing on the bill of a charity concert for his beloved Grand Order of Water Rats at the Blackpool Opera House, the opportunity arose for him to play the pre-performance music on the Wurlitzer there and the love was re-kindled for these wonderful instruments. Although it had been almost twenty years since he last played one, his sheer artistry, unsurpassed musical knowledge, unrivalled ability as an arranger and inate musicianship all combined to create a magic once more.
Since then he has gone on to appear as concert guest for theatre organ societies on organs around the country, including the Wurlitzer of the Blackpool Tower Ballroom - as well as maintaining his standing in other areas of the music industry and showbusiness.
Gordon holds qualifications from The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Trinity College London, The London College of Music as well as many awards and honours for a wide range of disciplines.
In 2006 he was invited to Buckingham Palace for his long contribution to entertainment for ex-service and war-wounded and in 2008 he was made a Freeman of the City of Glasgow for services to music and entertainment.
(Please Note: In the many cases where theatre organs have been computerised and carry a "live" recording and playback facility within the organ, Gordon is happy to introduce some of his other "talents" to theatre organ concerts, eg. xylophone, trumpet, posthorn, musical saw and, of course, singing to his own, pre-recorded organ accompaniment.)
