Arthur, like so many others in his profession, started piano lessons at an early age - in his case, at eight years of age. By the age of nine, he was playing for the Sunday School and at eleven held a post at a church in Scropton, Derbyshire. A couple of years later he became a member of a group playing regularly for dancing. This was followed by playing piano in a Royal Engineers' dance band during his National Service and, following this, Arthur played tenor saxophone and piano in a fourteen piece band until the 1950s.

His chosen instrument at the present time is his Wersi Performer Electronic organ and he plays this several times weekly for concerts and dancing in various part of the country, and has used it for weekend and five-day festivals this year (2003) at Torquay, Paignton, Weston-super-Mare and Scarborough.
