On November 5th 1968, Hodges and Johnson (then piano agents) opened their new outlet in Colchester and appointed Classically trained organist-George Fulcher as the manager.
He saw potential and was keen to purchase/sell Hammond organs - eventually managing to convey his enthusiasm for this to the proprietors. With his close pal, Alan Pilgrim (after several `in store` events) `Colchester Hammond Organ Society` was formed and from these humble beginnings the present day society exists (which still meets monthly on the first Friday - now at Alderman Blaxill School, Colchester).
George Fulcher sadly passed away a few years ago, but Alan (after surviving a very serious heart by-pass operation) continues to be `at the helm` now as president and PRO-he is the longest serving member of any organ society in the land.
In May 2014 we celebrate 45 years in existence-many organists (some now passed on to that great `organ studio` in the sky!) have appeared at our venues over the years - the concert to celebrate this will be on May 18th, at 2-45 pm and will feature two well known international organists - Dirkjan Ranzijn and Brett Wales and the venue is the Alderman Blaxill School, Colchester CO2 9BU.
Alan is very well respected and known by many artistes on the `organ circuit today`, for his banter and true generosity - he has been ably assisted by an enthusiastic team of committee members over the years and that continues to the present day. A more detailed description of the society and our monthly activities can be found in the club section at OrganFax.
