Jean Martyn and Penny Weedon have always wanted to perform together on stage – and with ‘Music To Watch Girls By’, staged by the Weyhill Electronic Organ Society at The Lights theatre in Andover on 5 March, their hopes were eventually realised.
A near capacity audience was wonderfully entertained as the ‘girls’ displayed their undoubted artistry – Jean on the Theatre’s Yamaha Grand Piano and Penny on her newly-acquired Yamaha Stagea ‘keyboard orchestra’.
The duo opened with the show’s title song before Penny was left to perform a solo spot. Jean replaced her on stage to perform a contrasting selection of piano pieces before Penny came back to join in with a session of duets.
The format was repeated after the interval, with arguably the best piece being saved until the end – piano and ‘orchestra’ performing Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 2 – briefly transforming the venue into the Royal Albert Hall!
The warmth and sheer enjoyment exuded by these two popular performers had clearly permeated into the auditorium and made for a truly enjoyable and memorable occasion.
A more comprehensive review of the concert can be found on the Society’s website.
