Lovers of theatre organ music on the south coast will be delighted to learn that concerts have returned to Southampton's stunning Guildhall, featuring the superb dual purpose Compton Pipe Organ. This installation was always regarded as one of John Compton's finest creations.
The organ was probably best known for the performances and broadcasts given there by one time resident and genius musician, Reginald Porter Brown. The organ became somewhat unreliable and underused in recent years and a major programme of rebuilding and refurbishment undertaken by Peter Hammond of HWS Associates has seen it returned to its former glory.
The 4-manual cinema organ console on the left hand side is complimented by a classical organ console on the right and it is possible from a combination of both sets of keyboards to recreate the very finest of tones from both the popular, orchestral and classical genres of organ playing.
Well known UK player, Nicholas Martin will present one of his flamboyant performances this coming Sunday May 3rd at 3pm where his ever popular Blackpool style of playing is sure to be complimented by a programme of music for all ages and musical tastes.
