I attended two concerts recently at the Royal Hospital School-Holbrook.
The organ there is possibly one of the finest instruments I have ever had the pleasure of listening to-from it`s very quiet ,ethereal sounds to the almost breathtaking loud ones!
The first of the two concerts was given by Nigel Ogden-what a very accomplished performer in many genres he is.
The second by the equally famous and extremely talented Nicholas Kynaston.
The two concerts where quite different in that Nigel included some lighter more well known pieces in his performance.
I didn`t know any of the programme that Nicholas played, but that is not in any way to diminish the ability of this fine classical organist.
As we sat listening to a piece which involved a section of rising crescendo, there was almost a wind that carried the bombarding bass notes down the chapel. After the final lengthy chord in this piece the natural reverberation of this magnificent building could be fully appreciated.
I went with my friend a little early for the concert to appreciate the surrounds of this marvellous Suffolk location, overlooking the river.
Cricket was being played and the scene was a typical English spring evening, all around the trees and plants were blossoming into life anew.
A marvellous aspect of tranquility, miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life and the somewhat dubious negative acts that we seem currently to hear so much about almost everywhere.
No canvassing politicians,no tele,no election speculation- just the sounds of willow on leather and the birds singing innocently-ah.........pure magic.
Come dusk, the light began to fade and we made our way to the chapel.
Two truly memorable events-I look forward to the next with eager anticipation.
Jennifer Kersey.
