I am looking for a cheap drum unit - it need not be too complicated, it only has to generate a drum rhythm from a keyboard midi sequencer clock. If it can play a "cowbell" sound then so much the better.
My very talented ex-pro drummer has decided to play drums as a semi-pro with me but as I've been using auto-accompaniment for 20 + years playing dance dates we need the guitar and the bass backing. I can mute the drum channel and hey presto we can begin to sound like a "big-band". Not only that, drum kits look really "cool" on stage - but he needs to be in sync with me.

OR - can anyone suggest a better way of doing this????

I have an external Technics SY-FD5 disc drive - happy to give it away to anyone who has a G7, C600 or C700 for the costs of the postage.
Not sure if it works with any other Technics models.

OR would love to swap it for a small digital rhythm box that has midi. I am trying to drive an external drum box that I can run from a Korg keyboard midi-clock to generate a click track for my drummer.

Thanks for your condolences, Nicola.
The only positive thing(if you can call anyone s passing positive)is that he more or less died doing the thing he always loved-he ate and breathed music-he didn`t linger on with a very slow debilitating disease.
His like come your way but once, if you are very lucky-I am glad I was one of the people whom he brought great joy to.
Look after yourself-enjoy every minute of life-it is so precious that not even the financially richest person in the world can buy a second of it.

Such a shame to hear about your friend Jennifer - he sounds like a great character, as well as a natural musician that will be sorely missed, indeed the end of an era for many, I suspect...

I know this is mainly an organ forum, but I feel I want to say a few words about my recently departed friend and jazzman extraordinaire(keyboards)-
Ray Ward-so please bare with me?
Ray had been a self taught musician for most of his life-unable to get to grips with reading music, but he never found this, in his case, a hurdle he needed to negotiate -he discovered he had a natural ability to just listen to the jazz greats on his old records and emulate their riffs and melodies, adding his own thus creating his individual style and a new dimension in music.
He ran the fortnightly jazz club here in the East of England and brought many great talents to our attention.
he worked extensively in UK and had, over a long career, association with many of the leading names in this genre.
He was very well respected by his peers.
His efforts to sometimes overcome the general apathy that exists in some areas for live entertainment meant that he sometimes went without financial re-emboursement himself so that his guests and audience would not suffer.
His amazing ability to fit in with any musician/outfit was legendry-I was fortunate enough to be at his very last gig where, despite feeling unwell, he played as good as ever-ending with his usual thanks to all his musicians (always at his side was talented bass player and long time friend-Alan Morgan) wizard vibes player-Johnny Withers(on this occasion very ably on percussion) and his guest musician, supurlative guitarist-Jeff Green.
I shall never, ever (nor will other regular attendees of the jazz night) forget his final words, always................................well,that s your lot-s.d off and I ll see you all at my birthday party a week today?
It was never to be-he has gone, but left us a great legacy of recorded material both on CD and DVD.
He was a humble man but he knew well the respect he commanded.
I hope the club will continue and be known as the Ray Ward Appreciation Society.
We shall never forget him-I pray that, over the rainbow, he has found his pot of pure gold-he richly deserves it!
R.I.P Ray Ward.(73)

I have a Tyros 1 that I have owned since its original release. I use the output jack sockets on the rear at home and when out and about. Both left and right channels have become a bit "scratchy" over the last few months to the point where now the right channel has no output at all. I have replaced the jack leads with a quality brand to no avail. Wiggling the leads around does intermittently transmit the signal so I know it is the jack socket and nothing more sinister.

The big question..... Has anyone had a similar problem and if so is it relatively straightforward to replace the jack sockets on the back? I am fairly competant regarding gaining methodical access to electronic equipment. However, are the jack sockets something that could be replaced by someone with an average knowledge of components and fairly skilled with a soldering iron. I suspect the most difficult part of the task is going to be gaining good working access to the board anyway.

I know the Tyros is getting on a little but I wasnt intending to use it as a doorstop for a while yet! Any ideas anyone??

I guess my 'ideal' setup would be an organ with all the keyboard/expander technology built into it, as long as I could keep my piston buttons, although some players don't seem to have any problems with the lack of piston buttons.

The overall appearance, and untidy cables etc has never been a real issue for me personally, as sound quality and clever features wins hands down every time over 'looks'. Having said that, I can understand how it would irk the gigging musician to constantly be faffing about with cables.

The only organ that I can see has made any real attempt to keep up with keyboard technology is probably Wersi.... I just don't understand why the organ manufacturers can't put the keyboard technology into an.. er.....organ. Is it really too much to ask? Why are organs SO much more expensive than the keyboards, when you are actually getting LESS features on them? Does it really cost all that extra money to put it in a cabinet with speakers? I know it's not quite as simple as that, and the amplification side of things will be far more extensive on an organ, but why not have the organ with the keyboard "chip" in it - or at least a chip that has the best sounds and features of BOTH??!!!! I do think it is something that annoys a lot of people.... it must do, otherwise they wouldn't be resorting to building their own special 'kit' to get what they actually want.

On another note, If I remember correctly, Yamaha UK weren't going to bring in the EL900 to the UK.... Tony Back (sadly missed by many) imported one, a few others did too, and then suddenly the EL900 was available in the UK......

Tsk! - I must stop this grumbling and get off my soapbox...... I think that's quite enough from me for one day...... *sigh*....

Recently purchased a Roland AT90S and would like to get some registration files from someone compitent with this organ. Roland only provides registration files for its new line of organs. I love the organ but do not find it to be very user friendly. I have a Yamaha Tyros and found several thousand registration on the internet "psrtutorial" site. This data was especially useful when I first got the keyboard. Thanks for your help, Rollin

The 'gap' was going to be a BIG problem, plus all the faffing with wires!

The D Deck is the same as playing an EL, and it's a shame that Yamaha UK didn't push to get the powers that be try it over here, because it is like a keyboard with two keyboards I guess!! It's light and compact, brilliant sounds and the majority of combinations from my old EL 70 worked on it without too much messing about.

I like to do my 'Blackpool' bit with the Xylophone on the top etc, and jumping from one keyboard to the other (:-D) and this would be near impossible on two keyboards...ok, it's not essential I know, but I would either break my fingers or the thing would collapse! hehe

I just wouldn't feel comfortable playing two keyboards, but I guess if I had to, thats the way it's being pushed, sadly.

Will a Scottish £10 note do Matthew? :-)

This is the only organ related website I come on, and the reason for that is I like the fact there are other people out there with completely different instruments/setups/configurations to mine, and I like to hear about other peoples choices of instrument and everyone else's views on a wide variety of topics. Life would be very dull if we all liked the same thing.... ;-)

Hmm.... quite a challenge you have set...!

Given that so many of the more modern keyboards seem to have lost the bank select midi function for changing the registrations to match, it makes even linking them up midi almost pointless (hence my refusal to part with my old PSR8000 linked into old EL90 which works perfectly from EL piston buttons).

Lack of piston buttons, as Cameron mentioned earlier is indeed a bummer. Yes there's the availability of a foot switch, (indeed a necessary requirement when tackling something like an Overture when fingers and thumbs may be otherwise engaged), but there is nothing nicer for an organist than sitting playing on the hoof choosing suitable registrations at random with the slick flick of a thumb or finger.

Re the gap between keyboards - I would definitely have a problem. On a personal level, until I get my midi processor box programmed to hold upper manual (with knee lever, hopefully), I'm currently trying to master the art of holding upper with pinkie while playing lower and changing piston button. Having small hands, I'd never cope with a big gap between the two, and as Cameron mentioned the gap also, I think it's something that needs to be looked at..... The angle, I think is a very personal requirement to what suits the individual, and what is comfortable - it would be great if there was some rig that the tilt could be adjusted to suit.

Again it's back to that old debate of organ versus keyboards. I really don't know what I am gong to do when my old EL90 gives up the ghost, even though I am only using it currently as a Motherboard. I just cant get my head round the prospect of using something without piston buttons. Perhaps I will go for a D Deck in future, or perhaps an Orla (?) as they seem to have a good midi spec on them which makes it easy to add expanders.... who knows?......

I think the "slapped wrists" from the "other" website is due to people daring to comment and share opinion on organ/keyboard matters on THIS site, although interestingly the "other website" hasn't exactly refrained from commenting about Organfax ("Comments by the back door cannot be regarded as constructive"...mmmmm...pot calling?) - When will this back-biting stop?

Funny enough - this is what tends to happend in a discussion forum. People discuss things relating to the "subject", in this case organs and keyboards......fancy that, eh?

That aside, I've had a look at the updates and I do like Ian's design. A great place to store keyboards in a stylish cabinet. My only gripe is that it is refered to as an ORGAN.....it isn't - and before anyone has a bash at me, I am NOT anti-keyboard!....call it what it is....it is a keyboard cabinet...and a really nice one!

For organ playing, I do prefer an organ. I find the keyboard gap between the 2-keyboard setup too wide for my own liking. Although I have to say if my EL90 dies and I cannot locate a D-Deck, I may go for a keyboard rig for ease of travelling. I would just need to think of a rig that would reduce the gap (for stretching my thumb/fingers from upper to lower for counter melodies/twiddly bits!), even with a midi keyboard as a "master" as a lower keyboard.

So here's my challenge.....what rig/frame/keyboards would give me what I want that doesn't require too much faffing about and would have little gap between keyboards? Is there a good angle to have the top keyboard on the frame?

Answers on a £10 note please. :-D

Slapped wrists? For what? Chatting about the Brand X, or for daring to mention the wonderful D Deck?..... ;-) If it's about the Brand X and it's not to be mentioned yet, then my wrists are well and truly slapped.

If on the other hand, it's about the wonderful D Deck / Stagea, then NOBODY will slap my wrists or try to shut me up from commenting on what a wonderful piece of kit this is!!! I had a nice chat to Penny Weedon about it and she was telling me about all the excellent added features on it like splits etc.

Good on you for taking it out in concert and sharing it with people. I'm sure you will have a ball with it. :-)

Oh, and at the risk of getting lynched, I agree wholeheartedly with your above comment about killing the organs off - I've thought that for years............
