About Stockport Organ & Keyboard Club

UPDATE from 19 March 2020 onwards ( last update to this page 13 October 2020)

CORONA VIRUS caused a temporary shutdown from March until 14th September 2020

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic the club had cancelled all Concerts and Free & Easy meetings up to 14th September 2020.

Our Venue, The Hazel Grove Bowling & Tennis Club, contacted us mid September 2020 to let us know they would be able to hire their function room to the various groups who have used it in the past including Stockport Organ and Keyboard Club. This was after checking with the local Environmental Health Department who confirmed that it was permitted under the various sections of the rules on Covid-19 compliance. With the help of Hazel Grove Bowling & Tennis Club we were able to carry out the necessary risk assessment and consulted our members as to whether they would like to come to our club again under the new circumstances. The seats were all booked in advance and allocated strictly according to a seating plan which allowed for the correct social distancing and so forth. Not all members felt they could attend because of their own health and vulnerability situation but the majority agreed that it was a good thing to be able to offer this to our members irrespective of whether they could come themselves.

We then went ahead with the concert on September 24th with Covid-19 rules adhered to and with reduced numbers compared to normal. The previously booked artiste Pete Shaw played and sang and was superb (even after not performing in concert for 6 months). Everyone enjoyed themselves and looked forward to the next meeting. We have since had another Free & Easy meeting where members play the club organ and their own keyboards. Like everyone else we do not know how the situation might change but we are happy to have been able to allow some people some joy and relief from the difficult situation that has been the case for the last 6 months.

Members and concert artistes have/will be contacted and kept up to date as the situation develops.

Some of the concerts from March onwards have been rescheduled for 2021 and concerts after September through to November 2020 could also be re-scheduled. Check with Tony Tyreman to find out the situation at the time you are reading this.

No one knows when this situation will be resolved but we hope everyone acts sensibly and follows the guidelines to keep themselves and the rest of the community safe in these troubled times.

Our details below will be what happens once the pandemic is over and we get back to normal.

NEW YEAR 2020   -  New Members Invited

We have now  been in our venue at the Hazel Grove Bowling & Tennis club on Douglas Road in Hazel Grove since 2012. This venue is very pleasant and caters for all our needs including car parking. We welcome new members of all ages to this venue and feel sure we will continue to prosper in 2020 and beyond.

We are an enthusiastic group of music lovers who always make any guests welcome. All types of music are catered for from theatre organ to jazz, pop to classics and everything in between. In fact  there is something for everyone.

The club meets twice a month at the Hazel Grove Bowling and Tennis Club on Douglas Road Hazel Grove Stockport. There is a car park and the meetings are held in the function room on the ground floor. Tea and coffee is available as well as beer, wines and spirits.

We have a concert on the last Thursday of each month when we have a very good selection of all different types of professional organists/vocalists/keyboard players. NEXT CONCERT - see our Concert Programme Diary below for latest news

On the second Thursday of each month we have a 'Free and Easy' LIVE MUSIC night where the members are invited to play either on their own keyboards/electronic piano or the club's Yamaha AR100 Club organ. Everyone is given the opportunity to play and players of all ages and levels of ability are encouraged and appreciated. The atmosphere is informal and help/advice is available and freely given to anyone who needs it whether it be music to play or settings on the instrument they want to play. Tea, coffee and biscuits in the interval is included in the admission fee.Come along and show off your talents whether you are a beginner or have been playing for a while. The emphasis is firmly on enjoying live music in a friendly social atmosphere.

If you are lucky you may win a Loyalty Bonus voucher. If your membership number matches the number drawn in our Loyalyty Bonus draw in the interval on concert nights. The voucher entitles the member to free entry to the next Free and Easy night and the next concert - this is worth £10.00 if both meetings are attended. We also have a raffle in the interval and there are notices and literature available to help members keep up to date on all the latest happenings and keyboard/organ events both nationally and locally.

Whilst the club is called the Stockport Organ and Keyboard Club and as such the main instruments played are keyboards of one kind or another the music, however, is from a very wide range of genres. We have had pianists and piano accordian players as well as organ and keyboard players. It is worth mentioning that modern keyboard instruments can and do provide a rich spectrum of sounds with an extremely realistic reproduction of any instrument you can think of, and some you might not even know. This means that whilst players will play say Theatre Organ sounds one minute they will play an orchestral light classic piece or a Big Band number the next and then continue with a Country classic or a modern pop ballad. In short the music is nothing like an 'organ recital' and is much more more like a musical show with numbers from the movies and stage musicals plus pop tunes old and new. If you come along  with an open mind and have a listen for yourself you will be pleasantly surprised and you will also be given a warm and friendly welcome!

If you are interested in coming along to our next concert or Free and Easy night we would be glad to meet you and make you feel at home (tell us where you heard about the club). You can always be sure of a very enjoyable and entertaining evening in a friendly atmosphere.

If you would like a member who lives in your area to bring you along for your first visit just give our chairman Tony a ring on 07786 565254 and he will take your details and "organise" it for you. Similarly if you need any assistance with transport to a meeting just ask us and we will always try to help! Please don't think it will be too much trouble, you only need to ask!

Our members are glad to meet and help fellow live music enthusiasts of all ages. So why not come along and judge for yourself?
