About Stockport Organ & Keyboard Club

Last update to this page 26 October 2021)

During the coronavirus pandemic we have held various concert and Free & Easy meetings whenever it was allowed within the regulations in force at our Venue, The Hazel Grove Bowling & Tennis Club.

Whilst the restrictions were in force we organised the meetings whereby the seats are all booked in advance and allocated strictly according to a seating plan which allowed for the correct social distancing and so forth. Now that the lockdown has been lifted on 19th July 2021 we will once more (cautiously) be able to enjoy making and listening to live music in a social atmoshere. The covid pandemic forced us to run the club somewhat differently as we were not able to hold committee meetings in the usual way. We have now changed to a more streamlined, simpler approach reducing the formalities to a minimum. We will be adopting a new revised constitution at our AGM on 12th August 2021 and we are looking to expand our appeal to a wider audience. The emphasis will be on live music in a social atmoshere and not limited to keyboard instruments.

NEW BEGINNING 2021   -  New Members are invited to register

From now on there will not be an annual membership fee - the entrance fees have been revised upwards slightly to allow for this to work. Registration will be required and a membership form can be completed at any of our meetings. Existing members will need to confirm their membership details at the next meeting they attend. All members will receive a quarterly newsletter and be notified about any of the special events planned for the future. We welcome people of all ages, backgrounds and musical tastes.

We have now  been in our venue at the Hazel Grove Bowling & Tennis club on Douglas Road in Hazel Grove since 2012. This venue is very pleasant and caters for all our needs including car parking, comfortable bar lounge and function room.

We are an enthusiastic group of music lovers who always make any guests welcome. All types of music are catered for from theatre organ to jazz, pop to classics and everything in between. In fact  there is something for everyone.

The club meets twice a month at the Hazel Grove Bowling and Tennis Club on Douglas Road Hazel Grove Stockport. There is a car park and the meetings are held in the function room on the ground floor. Tea and coffee is available as well as beer, wines and spirits.

We have a concert on the last Thursday of each month when we have a very good selection of all different types of professional organists/vocalists/keyboard players. NEXT CONCERT - see our Concert Programme Diary below for latest news

On the second Thursday of each month we have a 'Free and Easy' LIVE MUSIC night where the members are invited to play either on their own keyboards/electronic piano or the club's Yamaha AR100 Club organ. Everyone is given the opportunity to play and players of all ages and levels of ability are encouraged and appreciated. The atmosphere is informal and help/advice is available and freely given to anyone who needs it whether it be music to play or settings on the instrument they want to play. Tea, coffee will be available in the interval at the bar.Come along and show off your talents whether you are a beginner or have been playing for a while. The emphasis is firmly on enjoying live music in a friendly social atmosphere. We also have a raffle in the interval and there are notices and literature available to help members keep up to date on all the latest happenings and keyboard/organ events both nationally and locally.

Whilst the club is called the Stockport Organ and Keyboard Club and as such the main instruments played are keyboards of one kind or another the music, however, is from a very wide range of genres. We have had pianists and piano accordian players as well as organ and keyboard players. It is worth mentioning that modern keyboard instruments can and do provide a rich spectrum of sounds with an extremely realistic reproduction of any instrument you can think of, and some you might not even know. This means that whilst players will play say Theatre Organ sounds one minute they will play an orchestral light classic piece or a Big Band number the next and then continue with a Country classic or a modern pop ballad. In short the music is nothing like an 'organ recital' and is much more more like a musical show with numbers from the movies and stage musicals plus pop tunes old and new. If you come along  with an open mind and have a listen for yourself you will be pleasantly surprised and you will also be given a warm and friendly welcome!

If you are interested in coming along to our next concert or Free and Easy night we would be glad to meet you and make you feel at home (tell us where you heard about the club). You can always be sure of a very enjoyable and entertaining evening in a friendly atmosphere.

If you would like a member who lives in your area to bring you along for your first visit just give our chairman Tony a ring on 07786 565254 and he will take your details and "organise" it for you. Similarly if you need any assistance with transport to a meeting just ask us and we will always try to help! Please don't think it will be too much trouble, you only need to ask!

Our members are glad to meet and help fellow live music enthusiasts of all ages. So why not come along and judge for yourself?
