In early 1965, a group of organ enthusiasts who had recently purchased Hammond electronic organs had a meeting with the Manager of the local Hammond dealership and decided to form the Scarborough Hammond Organ Society. The Society would meet several times a year and invite guest organists to play concerts on organs loaned by the local Hammond dealer. |

After holding many fund-raising events over several years, the Society was able to purchase its own Hammond C3 (one of the last to be imported into the U.K.) with PR40 tone cabinet in 1975. A Leslie 122R speaker was added about 18 months later. |
|
The name of the Society was eventually changed to the Scarborough Electronic Organ Society when it was realised that some people were under the misapprehension that only owners of Hammond organs could become members of the Society. In July 2005, the Society completed its 40th season and in October 2005, as a befitting birthday present to itself, purchased an Allen ADC4600TH Three-manual Digital Theatre Organ, which has now replaced the Hammond C3. Some of our guest organists prefer to play the Allen exclusively and some prefer to play their own instruments exclusively and some prefer to play their own instruments plus the Allen. |

The Society has
approximately 100 members who have pre-paid for the season. Our concerts
attract average audiences of over 200. The concerts are held in the New Hall at Scarborough College, an independent school. This hall has excellent acoustics and good visibility from its 400 plus tiered seats. The College owns a Yamaha C3 grand piano which can be made available for use by our visiting artistes should they so wish.
